Decay (Pumpkin Seeds) is a series of 45 sequential copies of copies of copies of a bag of pumpkin seeds. Creating this piece was an intentional meditation, or spell, to decay dominant white supremacist narratives and practices. The drawing and inking was done with my non-dominant left hand, keeping myself in a prolonged awareness of the lure of the easy control of my dominant right hand.
6 months after this project was completed the bags became infested with mealworms, transforming the seeds into feces.
Created with a grant and residency from FRISE in Hamburg, Germany. All images from its installation in the exhibit "Distance" at FRISE.
