Aeriameter is an instrument for examining airborne specimens from the Chicago neighborhood Pilsen. Focusing on air pollution from the nearby Crawford and Fisk Generating Stations, I was inspired to depict phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye, yet can fill a space and affect our bodies. Seemingly magnified, animations of tangible airborne materials - bacteria, pollen, particles of lead - are presented alongside specimens of experiences: murmurs, music, and emotions. Visitors can press the forward button, adjust tone and volume, and identify each slide in the accompanying guide.
Aeriameter was created during a residency at the Experimental Sound Studio (Chicago), with invaluable help from Alex Inglizian. It was also partially supported by a Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
